Did you know that Black American celebrities are now tracing their roots back to Africa? Decades have gone by and indeed the era of the slave trade left a mark on African society in terms of identity. But over recent years, Black American celebrities are seeking their roots which have been traced back to Africa. We did make some findings and according to research, here is a list of 10 Black American celebrities who have traced their roots back to Africa in no specific order. While some celebrities have gotten citizenship rights, others chose to trace their roots and know their ancestral homes, using ancestry and genealogical databases. Unsurprisingly, many found their lineage back in Africa


1)#Erykah Badu

Erica Abi Wright born on  February 26, 1971), famously known as Erykah Badu is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress.  She is one of the American American celebrities who have traced their roots back to Africa, specifically Cameroon.  After she found out in 2015 that her heritage traces back to #Cameroon and according to OkayAfrica, she decided to journey there and reconnect with her roots which were characterized by the discovery of spiritual enlightenment.  Through her search, it showed she had her roots, from the Bamileke tribe,  where she met with chiefs and locals during her stay.

2) #Whoopi Goldberg

Popular for acting and also especially in the movie SERAFINA, Whoopi Goldberg was born and raised in New York City,  and through her search, her DNA was traced a few years back and it indicated that she has ancestral roots in Africa. Whoopi’s ancestors are from #Guinea-Bissau.

3) #Samuel L Jackson

Just like every other person will want to know their roots,  the actor, #Samuel L Jackson also wanted to discover his ancestry and as a result, he found them deeply rooted in Gabon. Prior to finding his roots, Jackson visited Gabon, where he met with the president, President Ali Bongo Ondimba, and his wife, Sylvia Bongo Ondimba. Jackson was given Gabonese citizenship and a passport.

4) #Tiffany Haddish

According to The Standard Entertainment and lifestyle, in May 2019, the American comedian,  and actress Tiffany Haddish became a full citizen of Eritrea which is the birthplace of her father, who had moved to the United States as a refugee before she was born. Raised up in the United States, she always identified herself as American with Eritrean parentage. Her first visit to  Eritrea was in 2018 to bury her father, Tsihaye Reda Haddish.

5) #Idris Elba

According to findings Idris Elba, in full Idrissa Akuna Elba traced his father’s roots back to Sierra Leon and in January 2020, British actor Idris Elba was given a passport from Sierra Leone, his late father’s birthplace. In his own words,  “But Sierra Leone, it’s a very different feeling because it’s my parent’s home,” he tells the world his roots.

6) #Blair Underwood

This Black  American icon traced his roots back to Cameroon in his quest to find out where his family is from which first sent him down south. As he appeared on NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are, Blair Underwood discovered his people from his father’s side are from Cameroon after which him and his dad,  made a pilgrimage back to their homeland.

7) # Oprah Winfrey

In 7th place, we would be surprised to know but yes the Queen of television also traced hers back to Africa. Though not specific the billionaire media mogul found out on a show called African American Lives that her DNA traced back to three different countries: Liberia (the Kpelle people), Cameroon (the Bamileke), and Zambia.

8) #Isaiah Washington

The American icon, known for his role as the gifted cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy is listed down in the history books as the first African-American to receive Sierra Leonean citizenship in 2008. Washington was born in Houston, Texas, where his parents relocated to Missouri City, Texas.

9) #Anthony Anderson

Born and raised in Compton, California but Anthony Anderson had his DNA tested and showed that he has traces of Bubi people of Equatorial Guinea, and from the Tikar, Hausa, and Fulani people of Cameroon.

10) #Chris Rock

One of the most successful comedians, Rock found that his roots stem from the Udeme people (Ouldémé) of northern Cameroon.
